Google's "I'm Feeling Lucky", Truly a Gamble?

چکیده
With huge quantities of multimedia information becoming available on the Internet everyday, our foremost mechanisms to find information still rely on text-based retrieval systems with their keywordbased query interfaces. However little to nothing is known about the retrieval performance and/or the quality of the user interface of these search engines. Often when a retrieval system is developed the evaluation focuses either on the retrieval performance analysis of the retrieval strategy, or on the usability testing of the interface offered by the retrieval system. Both experiments are time consuming to set up and often require the same preconditions to be fulfilled, i.e. a test reference collection, and in the case of usability testing respondents, to be available. The contribution of this article is twofold. It discusses a testbed for the evaluation of a wide variety of retrieval systems that allows both a usability and a retrieval experiment to be conducted in the same platform. Besides greatly reducing the effort needed to set up and perform such experiments, it also allows for the investigation of the relationship between usability testing and retrieval performance analysis of retrieval systems. Secondly, it presents the results of a case study with the testbed, comparing three major search engines available on the Internet.

"I'm feeling lucky": The role of emotions in seeking information on the Web
Cognitive Paradigms Established disciplines influencing the design of webbased search systems, such as HCI, ergonomics, or information and library science, traditionally take a rational, analytic approach to understanding users and to designing interfaces. For instance, the notion of search relevance in information retrieval is generally measured in terms of effectiveness (Saracevic, 1996). Ano...
متن کاملI'm feeling lucky: the relationship between affect and risk-seeking in the framing effect.
Engagement in risky behavior has traditionally been attributed to an underestimation of the associated risks, but recent perspectives suggest that affective reactions toward a risky option may better explain risk-seeking than risk perception. However, the precise relationship between emotion and risk-seeking remains unclear. The current set of studies elucidates the relationship between emotion...
متن کاملBorn lucky? The relationship between feeling lucky and month of birth
Research suggests that season of birth is associated with several psychiatric and neurological disorders, and also with adult monoamine neurotransmitter turnover. Personality traits are modulated in part by neurotransmitters; and population studies show season of birth variations in adult personality traits such as novelty seeking. Also, neurotransmitters are involved in suicidal behavior; and ...
متن کاملEating poorly, no exercise, and feeling bad about it!
I feel I am getting fat, am eating poorly, and not getting enough exercise. I feel generally unhealthy. I have no time for exercise. Though I'm in physical education, the only class that fit into my schedule was yoga. This is a great form of meditation, but I'm unhappy with my body shape. I have to eat in the cafeterias, and I try to eat healthy, but I'm always hungry, especially late at night,...
